52 Week Project: Week 14 - Scenic

"The South: Where evenings are best spent on front porches. A Place where hanging ferns can never be large enough. A place where summer seems endless and tree frogs sing loudly. A place where gentlemen always hold doors for ladies and strangers say hello. A place where the tea is sweet and the days are warm."

Richie and I took advantage of my last track-out of the school year by taking a 4 day vacation. Our first stop was Charleston, SC. Neither of us had ever visited Charleston and we had heard such wonderful things about the city from friends, so we were super excited about this leg of the trip. Charleston is an amazing place and we had more fun exploring than I even imagined we would!

The people of Charleston are extremely friendly and hospitable to tourists. Everyone was very helpful and  everyone had a story to tell us. The city has such a happy and peaceful feel to it and we had no problem keeping busy. There is great shopping, delicious restaurants, rich history and beautiful architecture. Even the SC flag made me smile.

We spent two days in Charleston and really took advantage of everything the city had to offer. We took a carriage tour to learn about the history, a walking tour of the haunted places in Charleston, and we also took a boat tour to view the gorgeous coast of Charleston. Although Tropical Storm Beryl threatened to ruin our trip, it was always a couple of days behind us. We had perfect weather!!

The city had breathtaking flowers such as azaleas, magnolias, and white oleander.

The shopping was unlimited and stores were abundant.

The coast was lined with unbelievable houses and is known as "The Battery."

Just liked this intersection :)

Even the street signs had character.

People who live slightly north of broad street are called snobs. People who live south of broad street are called s-o-b's. People who live slightly left of broad street are called slobs.

Like many cities in the south, Charleston was full of beautiful churches.

The carriage tour was our favorite of the three tours. We had an awesome and very lively tour guide and our horse, Luke, was as entertaining as our tour.

The art and detailed architecture was so unique and pretty.

Richie really liked the boat tour, but because I sat next to the railing of the boat and the wind was endless, I missed a lot of the descriptions the tour guide gave. (I also got a tan on one side of my body and windburn on my face that made me numb for a few hours afterwards!) I did however hear the description of this beautiful bridge, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. It is the third longest suspended cable bridge in the western hemisphere.

Waiting for the boat tour...

One of my favorite meals of the trip was at a French restaurant called
39 Rue de Jean - DELISH!!

We both loved Charleston and we will definitely be visiting there again!!

Our next stop on our trip was Bald Head Island, NC.

Bald Head is a quiet and peaceful island off of the southern tip of NC (it's very close to Wilmington, NC) and the only way to get to the island is by boat. The ferry trip is a little under 20 minutes and it pulls into the island's beautiful harbor. We have been to Bald Head before and stayed in a one bedroom house, but this time we decided to stay at the Marsh Harbor Inn Bed & Breakfast just to do something different. The Inn was right off of the harbor and it was very pretty. There are no cars on the island and everyone gets around in a golf cart. Once again, Tropical Storm Beryl was right behind us, but we lucked out and had terrific weather!

We ate at a restaurant called Mojo's on the first night and I was extremely happy to have a fresh seafood dinner (Richie does not eat seafood, so I ate it for as many meals as possible!) During dinner there was a very brief rain shower and we were pleasantly surprised with a beautiful rainbow.

On the island there is a lighthouse called Old Baldy. We have climbed to the top and the view is beautiful.  Although we did not climb to the top this trip, we were able to get some great pictures right before sunset.

Storm Beryl finally caught up with us Wednesday morning, but luckily we were leaving. The rain made it easier to leave because we didn't feel like we would miss out on anything. We boarded the ferry once again and our final destination was home.  We had an amazing trip and I can't wait to see where our next adventure will take us!!
